Heart Rate & Exercise

Measure how different exercises impact heart rate and understand cardiovascular health.

Driving Problem

Tasks

In a group, brainstorm different ways in which different activities might affect our heart health and jot them in your notebook. Share with the class!
Measure and record your resting heart rates using the method you learned and the stopwatches. Try several times. Write down your results in your notebook.
Set up exercise stations around the area: Jump Rope, Running in Place, Squat Jumps, Plank, High Knees. Put mats at each station and put necessary equipment in is designated area. Feel free to ask questions and suggest any changes if you think the exercises need to be easier or harder.
Perform light stretching exercises and measure heart rate at intervals to observe recovery rate. Let's see how quickly our heart rates return to normal. Did anyone notice something interesting about their recovery? For example, some of you might find that your heart rate returns to normal faster than others. Maybe you noticed that your heart rate drops quickly at first but then slows down. Or perhaps you observed that certain stretches help your heart rate recover more quickly. Share any patterns or surprises you discovered!
Analyze your collected data and discuss how different exercises impacted your heart rates. Let's share our findings. Did anything surprise you? Why do you think some exercises had a bigger impact than others? Then, create a large classroom poster summarizing the key findings from our heart rate and exercise project. Include a heart rate chart for each exercise station, fun facts about the circulatory system, and tips for maintaining a healthy heart. Make the poster colorful and informative so we can share what we've learned with everyone!
